The five stages of
SherryB's
Therapeutic process.
Building relationships
Problem Assessment
The first stage begins with relationship building. During this stage, Sherry engages with her clients to get to know them as well as to explore the issues that directly affect them.
The vital first interview establishes a foundation for the therapy and
ensures a strong foundation for future dialogue and the continuing therapeutic process
While building a beneficial, collaborative relationship, the problem assessment is occurring.
Sherry carefully listens to their client’s stories (life, work, home, education, etc.) and the reasons they have engaged in therapy.
Goal Setting
Sherry supports clients in establishing appropriate and realistic goals, building on the previous stages. These goals are identified and developed collaboratively, with the client committing to a set of steps leading to a negotiated outcome.
Therapeutic Intervention
This stage varies depending on the therapist and the theories they are familiar with, as well as the unique challenges the individual client experiences. Other aspects influencing this stage includes the clients age and interests.
Evaluation, Termination or referral
Termination may not seem like a stage, but the art of ending therapy is critical.
Drawing therapy to a close must be planned well in advance to ensure a positive conclusion is reached while avoiding anger, sadness, or anxiety (Fragkiadaki & Strauss, 2012).
